Endurance Riders

Endurance and Long Distance Equine Disciplines

I came off again and broke some ribs this weekend - second time this summer. Starting to thnk riding in a protective vest might help. Does anyone know about them or have a recommendation?

These folks have quite a variety of protective vests. I think heat buildup might be an issue, but certainly not this time of year here in Kansas.

I am riding in a Tipperary Ride Light. The mesh really helps with the heat build up and it is easy to trim off any of the back length you don't require.
I didn't like the idea of even considering a vest but due to some of the mountain conditions we ride in it has become almost a no-brainer not to put it on. I really don't even realize I have it on now that I am used to it as part of my gear. Am thinking of adding knee protectors next.....

hey if you ever make those knee protectors look me up. i run into things with my knees all the time and i am only 14 and have messed up knees from trees and fence posts. so ya if you do make them i would like a pair.

Well Sabrina, I have to admit that I borrowed of my kids set of knee pads that they were using for a modern dance class. They pull up the leg and have an elastic band back. We got them at an athletic/sports store and are the kind you can use for volleyball. They don't cut off my circulation or interfere but are not that comfortable for wear. Not an everday item but nice to have in the pack to use as needed on those narrow trails. I think my horse is getting kind of use to having my feet on his withers now anyways :)

You might like to consider a new revolutionary body protector Kanteq www.kanteq.com which is not only to the highest safety specifications but has been specially designed to fit the female form. I recnetly fell off and snapped my collarbone, broke 6 ribs and punctured a lung - see www.thelonghorseride.com Having decided it would be wise to wear a body protector, I ws concerned about riding long hours in one as the conventional protectors available to date are somewhat uncomfortable - to put it bluntly they squash your boobs! That was before I came across Kanteq - I have now been provided with one and it seems far more comfortable - I will report on its performance in the future.
The only disadvantage for you if you are in the States is that it is a British make - I don't know if it is available in the USA.

Sorry - just realised you are male! But info may be relevant to any females reading this discussion!
