A discussion for track logs. When you do a new "hand drawn" loop, just add a comment (or reply) to this discussion and attach your .kmz file to the reply. Then take the link for your comment and place the link in your vet card:) Easy as pie!!!! eh?
So, I take my GPS that hubby and I may be sharing. I download that track and save it as a kmz file...OK, I think I will practice this week, and make sure I can figure this out. Might not trust the techy hubby, who could not keep the GPS ON last time! Is there a way to save a kmz file in our google pages, and then link to it?
Hello Jonni,
You cannot upload a GPS directly into Google Earth.
You cannot save a GPS file directly into KMZ from Garmin software.
You can upload a GPS directly into MotionBased which is the easiest.
Then you copy and paste the MotionBased link to the vet card.
If you have an old GPS that will not connect to MotionBased do next.
You save a GPS file directly into GPX with Garmin software.
You can manually upload a GPX file into MotionBased, second easiest.
Then you copy and paste the MotionBased link to the vet card.
OR you can buy GPX2GE software and convert GPX to GE(KMZ).
Then you copy and paste the KMZ file to the vet card.
I could not get the free Google GPX2KMZ converter to work. I am certainly not the last word on this stuff so anybody with another way to do it lets hear it. I love shortcuts.
We hav e Delorme Topo!, and Street Atlas (current versions of both) Any way to save the files in that manner??
We are good in that the GPS will download to Motionbased just fine, but we have two of us riding, and only one good GPS. The other (Garmin 3plus) is not supported by Motionbased. We do not have the paid GPX2GE, and not sure we feel the need for the investment.
Pg.4 Supports USB GPS....(read it) Supports Serial GPS....(read it)
Pg.5 Do the "Saving Topo Data to Your Hard Drive" then you can put the CD's away.
Pg.246 Directions to upload tracks from GPS to PC.
After uploading save the file with a name you like. Next you should be able to do a "save as" and pick the GPX option with the same name. Remember the folder it is saved in. If you can make the GPX file then open MotionBased, pick Upload under "My Activities", click "Browse", find your GPX file and double click, then "Submit". The free version is very slow sometimes but the file gets queued so that you can "-" the program down and do other stuff. Eventually the file will upload and it will tell you.
OK, trying to see if this is right. This is "Trail 1" for me, I will be riding this on Friday... it measures 12.25 miles. EDIT: it didn't work right, all I got was the placement for Start/End.. will work on this and repost
Hello Opal,
I copied your KMZ file and pasted it into the Google Track Length Calculator and it said 9.3mi not 12.3mi so something happened in translation. It looks like you could drive the route and check it with the odometer.
Now open the KMZ file into GE. Then go down the left side and expand all the +'s in "My Trail kmz" down to the end then right click and copy the last item that says "My Trail".
Now open your browser, click "Favorites", click the link to the calculator, inside the big empty white box you right click and "paste". A whole bunch of numbers should fill the box. Then over on the right you check "British" to get miles and then down below you click "calculate".
Thanks Don.. it is probably user error on my part! I think I will drive it and see, maybe can do it tomorrow (right now covered in ice in too many places, but supposed to warm up here this week, am hoping I can ride it!)
OK I did the calculation, it says 14.9503 KM... the way that I did the measurement originally was to lay it out with the "ruler" function of GE.. so it must be off or wrong somehow?
Thanks for the link and directions, MUCH easier to that than try to keep the ruler thing! I just redid it and came up with the milage as well as KM.. very cool!
it is possible to upload the gps directly to google earth. If you get GE Plus ($20/yr) it adds the gps management tools, give improved resolution, and you can make 3dmodels with sketchup:)
