catching up: winter

Posted on December 20, 2008 at 10:30pm 0 Comments

It's a long time since January 2008, when I made the New Year's Resolution to do something new and different with my horse at least once each month during the year. I did pretty well, too (except for November, which was sort of a non-month, anyhow)...and then yesterday I realized that (duh) IT'S DECEMBER AND I HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING. And then I looked around. Snow is downright uncommon here in the Pacific Northwest, and if we get some it's usually… Continue

Catching up: Spring and Summer

Somehow, I've quite fallen quite behind on these entries...probably because I'm having more fun having fun than writing about having fun.

Yes, that sentence made sense.

When last we saw our green standardbred mare, she was NOT attending the Milwaukee Rail Trail Ride in Ellensburg WA. The ride is a good one, but not a good choice for a green horse who uses wide…

How to have fun without bringing your horse to camp

Posted on April 27, 2008 at 8:05pm 0 Comments

Four members of the Pirate Nation took the dinghy SS Jeep over the mountains this weekend to help out at the Milwaukee Railroad Trail ride in Ellensburg, WA. Ride manager (and fellow-Pirate) Gail Williams put together another good early-season ride--a challenging task in the Pacific Northwest, and a terrific opportunity for me to have fun.

As a pulser-and-generally-helpful-person for the day,…

Only in Canada, Eh?

The goal was to break the egg.

That was the point of that game: race to the middle of the arena, break the egg, and race back "home."

Who knew that eggs could be so elusive? We stomped, and scraped, and backed, scooted forward, and swung sideways, with riders trying like crazy to break that dang shell, and horses carefully placing…

Pirates at Home on the Range!

Posted on March 30, 2008 at 9:00pm 0 Comments

Now it's official: I've ridden *all* the distances at Home on the Range!

I've ridden the 25 (twice), the 50 (four times), and the 75 (twice)....and now the trail ride!

Ride manager Gail Williams and her friends did the usual weather dances and managed to deliver a mostly-gorgeous day on the trails, especially for the five of us who spent 11 beautiful miles on the blue loop.

Fiddle did great--stepped off…

Hello Aarene--how did the Milwaukie ride go for you? I learned you were there from Nikki. Indy and I had a wonderful, adventure-filled ride! You going to another one soon?

I went ahead and signed up for Milwaukie. Haven't a clue how to keep my horse there yet, but I'll get it figured out... Is there lots of space for electric corrals or should I buy some panels? Have yet to purchase a water tank also.... Yikes. Lots to figure out.

Dang, what happened to Home on the Range?

Thank you for the encouraging note Aarene. My virtual riding buddy in California said much the same thing. The Canadian rides sound really fun--they all have a nice attitude--guess that's part of being Canadian. Do you have ideas about which regional rides might be best suited to Indy and me in particular? From what I'm getting to know about her, she (and I ) dislikes going fast downhill. She's incredibly strong uphill. She has zero collection so is a bit scary to gallop on the flat, though she has a pretty good steady trot. I'm thinking really flat rides are probably a bad idea. She's positively giddy when tearing through the woods on a curvy path. Any ideas for a good match?

Wow. Looks like I won't be going. I didn't dream it would fill the first day! (I mailed my app on day two.) Gail says I'm 41st on the waiting list. Now I gotta go hunt through the PNER calendar again. Dang. Double Dang. Oh well, gives me more time to figure out how to get Indy to use her hiney instead of her front end for everything. We had a lovely time today at Lords Hill. Perfect cool weather. Beautiful. Sometimes riding alone is best of all! Hope you had a lovely day.

I don't know. The application hit the mail the second day of registration--but I haven't heard anything. Is there a list posted or did Gail contact you? I'll check the website right now.

Hello Aarene, I finally have an equine buddy who can do distance--now I just have to learn how the heck to keep up with her! Are you going to Home on the Range? Mary K in Snohomish.

Hello, Did you get the corral from a guy near Bend, Oregon? Is he still making them?

Yup, it’s like MySpace, but with much cooler content…and without all those irritating advertisements for enhancements.

I don't see your photo, so I'll add a picture of you on MY page!

Avast, ahoy, and all that other nautical stuff....
