About Me:
Due to a catastrophic event on April 16, 2009 I have had a resection of my entire life. I had an automobile accident that resulted in a shattered femur, shattered right tibia and fibia, with a shattered right heel, foot, and ankle. I am put together with pins, screws, plates, and rods. It has taken 3 months to become weight bearing. Which, by-the-way I accomplished in half the time that was expected for my injuries. Presently, I am walking in a walker for about 400 feet twice a day.

I expect to leave the hospital for the first time since April 16th to live with my daughter and son-in-law for at least six months. I will be doing outpatient physical therapy to regain full use of my legs, body, and mind. Hopefully shortly thereafter I'll be releasd to resume horseback riding.

The largest disappointment out of all of this has been tie inability to compete on my mare Valentina. I had hoped to seriously kick off her endurance career this year. Since last year was a total bust with all of the forest fires in the State of California. We barely got one ride in.

I am not certain what the future will hold for me and my horses. Well what are left of them since I have had to give, sell, and temporarily place all of them. Without the help of some very close and generous friends. I would have had to completely devest my entire horse stable. It has been emotionally draining to say the least. Fortunately, they have really good homes, care providers, and foster homes.

Prayers have been answered on so many levels through this ordeal. thank you each and everyone who have given me so much moral support. You are the best in the world. What a great community we have in this endurance world!

Hi D'Arcy:

Thank you for the e-mail, sorry it take me sometime to get back to you. I'm not in the habit of checking this site yet. I am riding a friends horse in the 25 next Sat. Oct. 3rd. but am still looking for a horse to lease, a free horse, etc. I used to live in Shingle Springs for 6 years. Do you know Karen with Rainbow Arabians ? She knows me well, started me first arab with her. Hope to see you at a ride soon. Best Wishes, Lisa cell phone, 619-250-9217

Just read about your accident on Ridecamp! I'm praying for your speedy recovery and hoping that you'll suprize the doctors by showing improvement beyond their beliefs! We all know how strong horsewomen are....hope you'll be able to read this and feel positive energy that comes with it. Keep in touch with your endurance family when you can...

Sorry it's taken me a little bit to write back, I didn't realize I had a message!
I guess that as far as cold weather goes, I grew up in North Dakota so I don't think it gets that cold in Wisonsin! I have two horses (including my coming two year old) in North Dakota and they do great out in pasture with good quality hay. They don't even have a real shelter, and I don't blanket. The trick when riding in cold weather is to have good blankets to wick the sweat away once you are done riding. I just watch it when it's very cold, and try not to push them hard enough to get really sweaty. I'm having trouble with all the rain here when it's very cold out! Brrrrr can't wait for "real" summer..........

Hey, that's funny, my gelding Bo Haskim is from Santa Ynez also! Don't remember which farm, I'll have to check that. He's got some strong Polish lines from Skowronek, though. Maybe they were neighbors!

Here's the link for the cooling vests I use.

http://www.palmflex.com/techniche/Cooling_Products.htm?gclid=CLfvnbXs7JQCFQVxFQodMCClrQ

They are much cheaper than the CoolMedics by far and I don't see that there's any difference. You just soak it and let it dry once before you use it the first time. I got both the Ultra Sport and the Deluxe which has the collar. If it's a hot morning, I start with the Ultra, even dry is ok, until the first water stop, then soak it. The other one I soak and wrap in a plastic bag and send in my crew bag if I want a nice cold one for the vet check. I have poured my water bottle down my back in a pinch on the dog day rides out by myself with no water around! I used my vests at the Malibu Ride, it was about 90 that day and I used the Deluxe from the vet check and it stayed cool all the way back to camp, about 3 hours and it was a dry, breezy, hot day!

I'm gonna check out the elytes you mentioned, sounds quick and easy. I've been using Driven, it's a mix of elytes, L carnitine and some other chemistry to help alleviate muscle soreness from lactic acid and keep up the energy level. Worked great on my last 50, felt better than most of my LDs!! And no soreness 2 days later...

Wish I could go to Fireworks, I've seen photos and some of my friends go, but I can't justify the drive when there are so many rides coming up around here. Gotta get ready for Tejon Ranch, my next 50, yikes.

Here's Bo Haskim (my Wonder Horse) at home after a 30 miler at age 25.

Hi Darcy! We did another fantastic ride today ~ the Pacific Crest Trail to Indian Valley!

Sorry I missed you when you were in Tahoe last weekend. Call me next time!

Thursday we're riding to Fallen Leaf Lake, and next week to Spooner/Marlette, etc, and the week after we're doing the PCT to the Forestdale Divide and Twin Lakes. All spectacular riding. ~ I'll post pics on my blog page.

Happy Trails... Deanne, Gabe & Bandit
