Dominika: That is a wonderful skill! Coincidentally, I am just now teaching the first step of this same trick to Ivan. I have him picking up his foot when I tap it with my toe and will eventually hope to be able to get on him while he is lying down,…

Training Ivan to be Great! December 2008

Kazi and Donnie

December 1:

We had flurries this morning, then again this evening, but they melted off in
between. Big fluffy fat snowflakes. It was very pretty in a snow globe sort of way,
but I am happy to see it melt.

Dec. 2:

With Kumquat's help we got the rest of the lights and some of the decorations on our
9 foot… Continue

Training Ivan to be Great! November 2008

Riding Ivan in the Moonlight!

November 1:

We are in the midst of a mouse invasion here. Either there is a litter of mice that have hatched inside, or they are coming in from the outside. Either way, Kumquat is thrilled. She finally figured out how to kill one last night, after chasing several others around and playin… Continue

Training Ivan to be Great! October 2008

Discussing the plan of action with Ivan.

October 1:

Ivan got on the trailer for me yesterday afternoon and stayed on it as long as I wanted him to! That was the lesson of the day, to stay on without backing off until I told him he could. Next lesson is to close the buttbar and hope he doesn't freak. I can't bel… Continue

Training Ivan to be Great! September 2008

September 1:

We painted on the house and worked on some wiring yesterday and today, a fun Labor Day's labor. This evening I did tack up and ride Ivan. He did really good, even opened his mouth wide to put the bit in. He doesn't have a clue about going forward, so Donnie would walk to the end of the arena and call… Continue

Training Ivan to be Great! August 2008

August 1:

We drove down to Florida to see my dad and family, leaving our farm in
some very capable hands while we were gone.

We had a pretty fun day here on my dad's birthday! We went to see "Swing
Vote", which Donnie and I loved! It is the first movie we have been to in
awhile that the audience actually applauded in apprec… Continue

Elektric is indeed one of the Asgard Arabians, one of the "ic" group of which Heraldic is also (1/2 brother). For the record, I would give anything to still be riding my wonderful Elektric! He was injured in the big wreck at the National Championship ride at Ft. Valley in 2006, seemed to be coming back great with a top ten in the spring of 2007 and training for the OD 100 that year since he had already top tenned the OD 75 in 2006. Came off the Foxcatcher ride a bit sore and a week later seemed to be no better. Trip to the vet and terrible news, Elektric has Lyme disease. Immediate IV antibiotics and actually went to the OD and camped with Dr. Lynn who was the treatment vet there to continue his daily IV meds. Two days after Elektric diagnosed with Lyme disease, my training partner for the OD 100 got bucked off another horse and broke her back! Horrible year and at the last minute my friend offered me her horse to ride on the OD since she couldn't. I rode the 100 in 2007 on my wonderful partner Judie's horse, she crewed with her back brace on, and Tom Sayvetz of Asgard crewed also. I got to ride with my daughter who rode friend Mary Howell's superhorse Shiloh who lived with us for months when she was was in a bind a while back. Well, wonderful memories, I could tell you stories!, but end result is we both finished the 100 and it was just the best!!!
Now for the "rest of the story". Elektric completed his IV treatments, didn't respond as he should have, wasn't strong enough for another treatment, and ended up totally crippled in a few months from the Lymes disease! He went up the Rainbow trail in October of 2007. Read "Elektric the Wonder Horse" on the ridecamp archives of that winter but have your hankies ready.
Since then I've been trying to connect with Emblematic who is also an Asgard "ic" horse and one of the last(thats him in the picture). I've also now gotten several babies from Elektric's Mum who I got years ago when I was so thrilled with him so I have up and coming siblings to look forward to. WHEW! Enough of that! I will look for you at the clinic next weekend, how about if I wear a purple bandana and I will look for your pink cap.

Great to meet you. Sumerduck is about 20 miles north of Culpeper, Virginia. I will also be at this coming weekends Clinton Anderson clinic. Coming with my friend Judie of Meadow Springs Training Center, and my daughter Jennifer who is the assistant trainer at Meadow Springs. I am looking forward to meeting you there and having time to talk horses.
In 2001 I trained my endurance horse Elektric using the Parelli level one, then went on with Clinton Anderson training as Parelli doesn't give you much young horse training skills until the higher levels. Clinton was easy to follow with his exercises like "follow the fence" and his reinforcing the one rein stops. If you find any pictures of my Elektric on the internet you will see that he rode his whole career with his Parelli hackamore, never had a bit or regular bridle. (You can see him and me on the Asgard Arabians, endurance horses website).
Keep on going like you are with your Ivan and you will have so much fun. Nothing can beat cantering along across a field with a bunch of other horses on a ride, and watching the other riders hanging on to the bit and having quite a hard time rating their horses, while I am cantering along with the reins laying on Elektric's neck, and eating a slim jim at the same time. People used to tell me afterwards that they were so jealous of ME.

Hi Diane,
Nice to meet you! Well, I am very new sort of to endurance. I used to live in Roanoke and was first introduced to endurance while renting a duplex from Frank Farmer (now deceased) and did training rides with him and his sister Betty Baird. I didnt know how to ride, they put me on a horse and off we went and they taught me as we went...crazy! But I learned a lot from them. that was back in 86. Then kids took over my life and now I have time again to actually to some rides.

My horse is young too and had just been trained in 08. He dumped me once before the Fort Valley and knocked me for a loop and a big MRI bill but He is a sweety though. We still have a lot to learn, but did great in the Fort Valley 30 ride in Oct. despite the pouring rain.

I plan on doing the three Old Dominion rides this year, and just might try the VA highlands again to see if we can do it a little faster. That was a fun ride!

Do you plan on doing any of the Old Dominion rides?
