Conflicting Information

As a trainer myself, I love to read articles about mule/horse training. Often, in the same magazine even, I will read conflicting information from different trainers' articles. One may say "never grain your mule" while another says "give your mule a little grain or treat". Or the old shoeing/barefoot debate. Some trainers insist on britchen, some suggest cruppers. There are at least a hundred ways, it seems, to get your critter to stand for mounting, or to turn on the haunches, or even to stop w… Continue

The Monty Hoof Saga

'Twas October 18, 2009. It's never a good thing to find a blood trail when going out to pet the mules. It's worse when you see the 1-2 foot stream of blood shooting from the pastern. I took Monty into the barn for a pressure wrap & some time indoors to make sure it worked. Thank God, it did. Later that night I changed him to a standing bandage without the pressure. I used only homemade saline to clean the wound. A very deep cut from barbwire, deep.

Weed's Misadventure

If I recall correctly, this happened back in late September. (Read: sometime after late July, before October. ;)
The critters had been on walkabout for a few days when D. Weed determined that thay needed to come on home. You see, he had a meeting with Mr. Porcupine the night before. He knew he needed me to help pull the quills out. It actually took Chuck & I & a few well placed ropes & hobbles & a feed bucket secured to his face, but we got the job done.
I had already pulled out… Continue

Big Horn Or Bust? More Like Big Horn Despite Bust--by Nellie

Mom loaded me into the trailer at 2:30 on Friday afternoon for the 4 1/2 hour trip to the Big Horn ridecamp. At 11:30 we rolled into camp & I finally got to get out of the trailer. You see, I had a trailer endurance ride before the actual endurance ride. About 6 miles out of Buffalo the oil pump went out on the truck. At least it wasn't a super hot day.

Things Are Lookin Up

Fast forward to the end of May. I'm back to work, finally. Yea! One horse for a spring tune up & two mules needing some work. As for my own, Denny is all healed up & sound again (thanks to the little 'healer' Reno for keeping his wound clean). Monty has been sound, poked a hole in his forearm of the same leg then lame again, healed up & got sound then did something to be REALLY off on his left hind but that seems to be better now. He's back to running with the herd & looking soun… Continue

marirose,

i've been trying your suggestions for feeding molly and they seem to be working. she is getting less than 2 cups of ultium morning and evening and seems to be doing well with this. she is also getting all the hay she can eat.

so far this season she has done 7 l.d. rides. placed in most of them with one first place and also two b.c.'s.

thanx again for the advice.

Well I am embarassed. I had no idea that I had a "My Page" thing with messages in it from several people that I never got and of course never answered. So tonight I was poking around EnduranceNet and found your answer to my offer to make elevation profiles. I copied the 2 you requested, Fanny & Capps, and will do them this week. Sorry about the delay. I wonder howmany other members thought their posts were being ignored when in fact the answers were posted some place that they did not know about? Actually when I send this comment I have no idea where the hell it's going. I hope you get it.

Snowed 4' on the Thursday that I took off to go. It got slushier and deeper as I got closer to Interstate 70. I turned around and got home just in time. They closed an eighty mile stretch of I70 and travelers were either stuck sleeping in their cars stuck on the interstate or taken by State Patrol to a shelter overnight. As I sat back here in Colorado and it continued to snow, I heard it was in the mid 60's on Antelope Island....Waaaah!

marirose,

when i first got my mules two years ago i tried to feed them like i would a horse. i have fed purina ultium for the past 5 years which is a very high fat feed and actually can't get enough into my mare to keep her in good condition through the 6 month season. she eats a bag a week at least.

feeding molly ultium daily gets her a little hard to handle but the biggest issue which i seem to have is her getting "loose" and not forming manure apples. i think this is due to her having too rich of a food.

last season i did 15 rides with molly and will do at least that many again this year. therefore i think she needs a high quality diet. she basically gets all of the grass hay she can eat and sometimes some alfalfa. i cut way back on grain but am concerned that she just isn't going to get enough calories. i've also learned that i can't feed her like i would feed a horse.

i think i need some help finding a good diet for her that will keep her going throughout the season. any help which you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

sometime when you aren't busy look up her record on aerc. her realy name is miss molly mule. she's done very well for her first two seasons and i'd like to move her up to endurance next year.

marirose,

thanx for the info. about 5 years ago you were at the colorama ride in wi and entered the "hunnert miler." i met you briefly that weekend. anyway, two years ago i purchased two mules for endurance. since have sold one. the mule which i have i think will be a good endurance mule in another two years. she currently has two seasons of l.d. and about 500 miles.

i know little about feeding her and have had some issues. looking for lots of advice. would it be o.k. for me to call you sometime and discuss feeding with you? if so, please advise your phone number and when calling would be best.

thoughts?
