About Me:
I live in West Wales, where I run a Welsh Section B pony stud www.cwrtycadno.com.

I used to compete a lot in endurance, and won a few races, but time and other committments - see the Long Horse Ride below - mean I no longer have time. In the past I have represented Wales and was selected for the British Intermediate team - unfortunately my little arab stallion injured his back just before the international event!

I am currently organising/participating in an endurance ride with a difference - a horseride from Beijing to London between the Olympics! See my website below.

The profile photo is of me on my mad arab mare Silver Sea Gem (Silvy). We won the William Hill Man-Horse Marathon in the late 1990s, but she is now retired to stud.

We used these adjustable saddles on the first section of the Long Horse Ride on unfit horses we had not seen before, and rode them for about 8 hours a day. It was easy to adjust the saddles to the horses' shapes, we had NO problems with them, and they were extremely comfortable to ride in.

I am currently organising/participating in The Long Horse Ride from Beijing to London between the Olympics.www.thelonghorseride.com. The ride is in partnership with the Chinese Equestrian Association www.horse.org.cn and in China is called the Sino-British International Friendship Ride. It is also supported by EnduranceGB and helped by the British Equestrian Federation - see their website www.bef.co.uk for current article.

We successfully completed the first leg of the ride in October 2008, riding from Laolongtou, where the Great Wall reaches the sea, to Badaling Great Wall in Beijing district. The second stage of the ride will start from the Guangting reservoir on the weekend of April 12th 2009, to coincide with the Guangting Long Distance Ride, which I believe has FEI status. It will then continue roughly along the course of the Ming Great Wall to the other end at Jiayuguan, arriving by early August.
We will be using Chinese horses for this stage, probably Mongolian or Shandan.

The ride aims partly to carry a message of goodwill from Beijing to London in their Olympic years, partly to raise money for disadvantaged children worldwide through our designated charity www.schoolchildrenforchildren.co.uk

We are mainly funding the ride by making one or two paying places at a time open to riders who will also be expected to raise some money for charity.

Zorbee does it again.

The Long Horse Ride relaunch last week went off without hitch see http://thelonghorseride.blogspot.com/2009/08/zou-ba-were-off.html and we have been making fairly good progress, covering over 100 miles across the North China grasslands. The photo shows Li Jing and Hua on Zorbee and Shandan somewhere near Hua De in Inner Mongolia. Unfortunately on Wednesday Li Jing was injured when Zorbee got overexcited and fell over in a hole. He has broken the… Continue

A morning ride in northern Hebei.

Here I am on Ba Jiu during a wonderful morning ride through the Chinese countryside of northern Hebei. The ride relaunch officially starts tomorrow, apparently to the accompaniment of fireworks, which could prove interesting. My new Kanteq body protector may come in useful sooner than I expected! Wutala has persuaded me to attend the endurance race in Inner Mongolia, even if though I have turned down a ride - I think he is angliing to get me at least… Continue

Back in Guyuan

Back in Guyuan to meet up with the horses again. Yesterday they were all shod traditional Chinese fashion, strapped to a shoeing frame, which rather resembles an instrument of torture - some horses might agree! The photo shows the patient Bajiu taking his turn.

A Salutary Tale

Posted on July 26, 2009 at 2:30pm 0 Comments

Counting down till Thursday, which is when I fly back to China to continue with the Long Horse Ride. Wutzala of the Chinese Equestrian Association told me he was going to organise a press conference and party for the weekend, and I assume we will travel back to Guyuan (where I fell off and we left the horses) at the beginning of next week.

He also invited me to take part in an endurance race in Inner Mongolia in a couple of weeks time - all expenses paid and horse provided. It was… Continue
