2009 VVMM - Getting Ready - the good and the bad

It has been a busy week - most of it found me tied to the computer getting an article finished for the April issue of Endurance News and to the EN editor before I could get my 4 ponies ready for the VV March Maddness ride. The small stuff needed for the ride was done quickly, but the big job – the shoeing -- I was holding off because I was anxiously waiting for my order of the new Easy Boot Gloves to arrive. My plans were to use the Gloves on the back feet of the large ponies Itchy and… Continue

NEED a new saddle!!! ASAP Can you help?!!

Hello to all!

Conditioning is going well- as long as the weather co operates!! ("fair weather rider" echos in my head!!)

I currently ride in a Wintec Pro Endurance saddle with CAIR & adjustable gullet- I thought I did A LOT of research before buying this saddle. It has gotten me by with TAZ- but never REALLY sure if it fit her properly.

Now- with my new horse, Bling- I just DON'T want to take any chances that this saddle doesn't fit her right. Sweat pattern… Continue

Something to chew on...Our Common Enemy

If it eats and shits and you can ride it or turn it into food... It's livestock. If you feed it, care for it, water it, doctor it.....sell it to the highest bidder....You're a livestockman....

I don't care if it's cattle, sheep, goats, pigs or chickens. Maybe even ostrich. Good riding horses or horse meat on the plate… Don't care if you have one head or one thousand, it’s all the same.

Those of us… Continue

Bekki has one more surgery to go.

Thank you all for carrying Bekki along this far on her journey with cancer. She is doling wonderfully, looks great, feels good, and is getting the prettiest crop of hair you ever saw. Everyone wants to pet her head!

The next phase will be a hysterectomy this coming Friday, February 20th. This is being done as a precaution, as the type of cancer she has often recurs as ovarian cancer. Interestingly, a robot named "da Vinci" will perform the surgery, guided (we hope) by the surgeon,… Continue

When I Am An Old Horsewoman

When I am an old Horsewoman: I shall wear turquoise and diamonds, And a straw hat that doesn't suit me.

And I shall spend my social security on white wine and carrots, And sit in my alley-way of my barn And listen to my horses breathe. I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night And ride the old bay gelding, Across the moonstruck meadow If my old bones will allow.

And when people come to call, I will smile and nod As I walk past the gardens to the barn and show… Continue

Sunday Sunshine and Summer Heat in February

How often does one have to enjoy summer weather in a winter weekend? Not often enough, I'd say! And what a treat that it happened during the VV ride!

Saturday was wonderful -- warm and inviting. I rode Drummer out, heading out and down trails that I wanted to check to see if there were any windfall branches and trees that needed cleaning up. The ground was still fairly hard, even though the mud was getting deep and starting to suck at the feet. We went places he’d… Continue

Cloudy today. A somewhat discouraging & at the same time great ride. I had planned on riding Nellie & had a great trail picked out..... Well, poor Nellie is VERY lame-hopefully an abcess brewing, but I couldn't find it. So, I slapped on the icthamol & taped it all up, gave her some bute & prayed that it would be just an abcess that I can find tomorrow rather that a pulled something due to the slick mud. That put Monty up for todays really cool trail. Well, that mud was just way… Continue

2/7/09 VVdoitagain ride :)

We had a wonderful ride today! The beautiful full moon was rising over the mountains to the east. It was about 39 degrees with a light wind. My friend, Sara, rode another friend's mare, Boo (Morab) since Jack is coughing. We took off close to 2 PM and made a big circle out on the BLM. Did some great "cow work" with Amara. She will now move the bulls without terror and, in fact, kind of likes it. Overall, was amazing… Continue

Barefoot'n through the first day of the VVDoItAgain

Seriously, with the "freeze/thaw-to-50-degrees/freeze-to-15/freeze/REALLY FREEZE-down-to-1- degree/thaw-next-day-to-60 degrees" diversity of weather we've been having here in Northern Virginia this winter, I was really torn as to whether I should shoe, boot, or go barefoot for the VVDoItAgain ride.

For reasons known only to the weather gods, they decided the weekend of the VV would be spectacular - highs in the 60's - even though the two days would be sandwiched in between two… Continue

2009 MS Walk

Each year I have participated in the MS Walk that is done at JMU. With the way the economy is this year i can understand why people are finding it hard to contribute to different organizations/Charities. I however would be greatly appreciative if those people who can contribute will contriute to the MS Society.... Some of you know about a couple years ago I was diagnosed with this uncurable disease. Over the past 2 years i have helped raise over $2700 in fundraising. Any contribution will be… Continue

Well, speedy we were not. Did visit with the neighbor for about an hour. Stopped for pics a few times. Footing had us mostly at a walk with a rare spot to trot. Saw a herd of antelope, lots of white tail & a few mule deer. It was a beautiful day!

Feb 6-8?

Hi Fellow Riders,

Anyone else going to the Clinton Anderson clinic this coming weekend in Lexington, VA? I am along with a girlfriend and my 18 year old daughter. If any other endurance riders are planning on going maybe we can get together and go to dinner for a nice visit.

Megan I kind of figure you won't be able to come but I'm sure your are really familiar with your home town boy Clinton and what a terrific horseman he is. Just read a big article about him in Western Horseman… Continue
