Now it's official: I've ridden *all* the distances at Home on the Range!
I've ridden the 25 (twice), the 50 (four times), and the 75 (twice)....and now the trail ride!
Ride manager Gail Williams and her friends did the usual weather dances and managed to deliver a mostly-gorgeous day on the trails, especially for the five of us who spent 11 beautiful miles on the blue loop.
Fiddle did great--stepped off… Continue

As of tonight (Wednesday) I am at 299.74 miles -- just 1/4 mile shy of my goal of reaching 300 miles today. Of course, had I enough light while galloping through the fields after dark, trying to get in the last 7 miles I needed to hit that magic number, I could have done it. But...it was already an hour past sunset and I could barely see the ground under Andy, let alone the GPS. And the dark was getting darker by the second. I had a rough idea of the distance I needed to cover, so I was --… Continue

More than a year ago, I made the difficult decision to euthenize my beloved Standardbred mare, Story.
Less than a week later, I got a phone call from the Standardbred rescue agency:
"We heard about Story, we're so sorry, you were really brave...." (blah blah blah blah) ....We can't help noticing that you've got an empty stall."

There is one ride that has always claimed the top honors as the BEST
ride anywhere! That is the ride from my farm to the Shenandoah River
and back -- a lovely, scenic 25 mile ride.
But... I digress. The
river ride took place at the end of the week. I must start from the
beginning... the beginning of the week, that is.Monday, March 17
It was Itchy's turn today -- and I was in the mood to give him a good
conditioning ride up the mountain - a total of… Continue

Been a while getting this finished due to health issues here. Had a sleep problem that necessitated nights in a sleep clinic to diagnose and then arrange treatment with my new best friend, an air pump that pushes air through my sinuses so that I don't partially wake about 90 times an hour. Good… Continue

A beautiful Sunday for a ride! I was at Vasquez Rocks on Saturday with my niece and hiked down into Little Horse Canyon and the stream was flowing nicely and there were tons of beautiful yellow flowers blooming. We took a lot of pictures and ended up caught in a very sudden shower which turned to slush and then turned to snow, but only for about an hour. But we raced to the truck and turned on the heat really quickly as we only had light clothing on. The temp. went from 56 degrees to 36 in a… Continue

Saturday dawned warm and lovely -- another unusually perfect day in mid-March, just ripe for a ride... or two.
On deck today was Andy and Drummer -- the former lean and clipped and shod for foxhunting after having been my weekday hunting mount for half the winter; the latter a fat, hairy, barefoot couch potato who has done zero all winter but eat and get fatter. Both ends of the spectrum -- both fun to ride.
Before heading out on the trail with Andy, I checked to make sure his… Continue

Spring has graced us with deliciously warm weather -- so unusual at this time of the year. But with 5 ponies now being worked under saddle, I am thrilled for the nice days, even though I feel like I'm in the saddle 24 hours a day! This week has raced by so fast I'll do a quick recap of the last four riding days.
Tuesday - 3/11 - I decided to begin my day by walking Drummer down to watch the Piedmont Hounds go off. He was very good, standing quietly while looking wide-eyed at the… Continue

Well, did we luck out or what? Arrived at ride camp at 11 on Friday and selected an area to set up a somewhat circular camp with 3 rigs around a central area for the horses. This was to prevent too much wind exposure as in years past. WHAT WIND? About 20 minutes into setting up camp, I was hot! Woah, THIS is WINTER? I have frozen at this ride for the last 3 years, with wind, rain, ice, snow and frozen water buckets on the menu. It was so beautiful this year. And we had the giant flocks (?)… Continue

My plan for today was simple -- ride Itchy up the mountain to do the final trail clearing so we can trot non-stop to the top, and get Andy out to see how fit he still is for foxhunting this Wednesday.
Of course, I had to wait until the weather warmed up a tad more -- it was in the 30's this morning with a tiny wind -- just enough to make me say "I'll wait until late morning to start". While that meant I was going to be working Andy later in the afternoon, it… Continue
