Rabbit Run 30 mile LD. March 27th, 2010

This ride is very well run. Last year I had a blast, and this year was even better! I was taking Cosmo and he did super. I camped out in the 20* weather. It was CHILLY. I've been looking forward to getting started with Cosmo's barefoot career. The 30 mile ride was two 15 mile loops. We started at 9:00a.m. The weather warmed up to around 50*. I only sponged once on trail, and didn't have to at the holds. Cosmo was eating and drinking well. At the hold went right to the pulse takers, 58 pulse,…

Well, I went on vacation to ride and camp. The last day, my wonderful jumping jackrabbit of a horse jumped on my foot and broke it :( I was hoping to go camping in a couple of weeks and was hoping for an added late season CTR. Well, at least it happened on the last day of vacation and I still rode 12 miles, broken foot or not. I figured why waste a perfectly good day. If it is broken, it will still be broken when I get back. We rode at Uwharrie and the Great Smokie Mtn Nat Park in NC. What a… Continue

OMG, I pulled Jazzi's shoes!

I had Jazzi's shoes pulled yesterday! I had been thinking about it for a long time, but had all the usual concerns and well, I was not looking forward to the transition. My daughter's mare, Lyric has been bare foot for about 4 years and is (now) doing really well. But it took a really long time to get to this point. Jazzi also moves very different from Lyric; she wares her hind shoes to the point of breaking in two. Jazzi also has high/low syndrome which had been getting better with special… Continue

2011 XP?

It has been way too long since I last posted. So much has occurred, Karen has been diagnosed with cancer that has wrapped around the great vessels in her chest, I had a 3 week bronchitis that consumed an entire case of Kleenex, the rain has been unrelenting and now my daughter has the flu. No excuses, just a really miserable month.

But I write today of the future and with the grace of God, of a goal I will obtain, the 2011 XP Pony Express ride. This once a decade ride covers… Continue

Diary of a Chicken

The outdoor arena. It looked safe enough. The sand was soft and deep. What could go wrong?

But then, I was riding the 4 YEAR OLD. The very tall (15 hh for pete's sake!), very bendy, very agile, 4 YEAR OLD. The one that tossed me last fall and sent me to the ER. She's very mellow, very sweet, and actually very slow right now (a bit porky from the winter...), but that's not what's in my head. In my head, is the fresh memory of being fine one second, and the next hitting very…

Winter Blues

Too much snow, too cold, and Achilles tendonitis have kept me out of the saddle. I have hope that the weather is changing and that the mild torture of physical therapy will have me feeling like Annie Oakley. The horses are getting bored too. The cattle next door are beginning to look interesting to them. But enough whining. We live in Ohio which means that one day the furnace is pumping and the next day we have the air conditioning running. Spring is sometimes as short as a single afternoon…
