Uno goes for a spin

I haven't managed to get Uno out as much as I'd like, so he's looking very plump, but now that Roo's on break after his 100, hopefully Uno will get more work. Anyhoo, here's a loop we did this evening around Cronin Ranch. My friend Ann came along and rode Hopi (even more needed), so we spent quite a bit of time schooling him, since he was leaping about - hence the slooooowwww speed. All three horses were barefoot - and Uno needs to wear boots if I'm going to be so enthusiastic with my rasping.… Continue

Training Ivan to be Great! May 2008

We arrived at Va Tech a few minutes early and they took us right in. Kazi was ultrasounded first, then her uterus was flushed. The liquid flushed was drained thru a very fine screen and the vet looked at the screen in a microscope for what seemed like forever. He said he didn't see anything on the first pass....and I stood next to Kazi… Continue

One Last May Flower Ride

Had a chance to get one more ride in for the VV May Flower Ride. Freddy came back and he's definitely hooked, he wanted more miles!! So we did a very technical, tough hill loop. It was about 9 miles in 2.5 hours. That was good since it was either up or down almost all the way. Freddy's doing great. My only disappointment is that I forgot the camera again, darn. The flowers were really beautiful up at almost 4000 feet and the view was wonderful due to the windy weather. Hard to believe it was…

VV May Flowers Ride

Well, it's only fitting that there should be some pictures of FLOWERS! Although they were not taken while riding, they are from my usual riding trails. This one is the Palo Verde tree in my yard and the rest were taken at Vasquez Rocks Park and represent the typical local high desert flora!…

I've got a Junior rider!!

I'm so excited! My nephew Freddy, who has come with me to many endurance rides, has taken the first step to becoming an endurance rider! He has already proven himself to be a great camper, good company and an ace dog sitter! He loves the horses and has been asking for a while when he might be able to try, but he'd never ridden my horses outside the corral. Well, for a while I only had one rideable horse and then when I did have 2, I felt they were just too much for him. I couldn't figure how…

Wild, Crazy Day

Well, the wind has been whipping & then gusting even faster. Wow!

I need to keep an eye on my old mare, she appears to be in foal from accidental breeding last year. Didn't figure the old girl still had it in her. Either there's a foal in there movin around or it's an alien. :o) That said, I 've been keeping Denny up in the lot with Hoppy so I could ride him to gather the herd. Easier said than done. The first attempt a couple days ago ended with him spending the day in the horse…

What Hoppy has taught me about starting range colts vs Michigan colts

About Hoppy: 5-6 year old, occasionally caught, mostly wild. Just gelded last year. Very independant.

WY-First off, don't take the halter off, even in a 40' round pen. (It took me 3 days & shrinking the round pen down to a stall.) In fact, it's a good idea to let them drag a lead for a few days. MI-Everything that came to me in Mi had been handled-for better or worse.

WY-Yes' a 5 1/2 yr old can live that long without ever having his feet picked up. MI-Mares & foals are…

Hoppy again

Well, Denny foiled my plan to ride out & bring the herd in this morning. He turned into a lunatic & exploded every time my foot got near to the stirrup. Sooooo....since my barn is still under construction, he got to spend the day in the stock trailer. So Hoppy was the only one I got to ride today. (Had to stain & seal MORE boards :o( & shampoo our new, used, free couch.)

On a good note, however, mister Hoppy was truly a gentleman today. He really relaxed & got into…

Ridin with Mike & AJ

Well, finding horses & mules was the problem today. I hiked around the top looking for them--not there. I looked over the edge---not there. As I headed back, Chuck found me & gave me a ride on the quad to go look some more. Found Nellie by herself---couldn't catch her. Chuck spotted the rest so we headed back to the barn for the truck. Mike & AJ were there, so we loaded the tack into the pickup. That's when Nellie strolled in---caught her with some grain. (I really hate doing…

Hoppy's 1st ride out

Yeaa, Hoppy rode out of the round pen today! A whopping 1/4 of a mile, but hey, it's something.

The real excitement is that there was no excitement. He was such a good boy, he even let me trim his front feet after. (It was likely his first hoof trimming too.)

I didn't push things to try a CRI--he's still learning to lead well, but I did do the other stuff.

Prepare yourself for this trail:…

May 17, Branding Day

Hold on to your hats folks, I rode Nellie a whopping 1.22 miles today! Whew!

It was branding day & all the riding we got to do was to gather the herd & put them into the corrals. After that is when the action started.

Run for the Border

Well we finished Run for the Border in good form.

Magic looked very well, she had all A's on her vet card except skin tenting, it was a B. It was really obvious that it wasn't good, I think we better pre-load next ride. We only started electrolytes on Friday due to trying to not over load them. She got first place in the junior division and completed in 5:36. She didn't forge, interfere or have any issues to speak of. Whitney rode her very well.

Leo finished 2nd in the UMECRA…

The Rundown on Roundup

What will this day be like? I wonder.

What will my future be? I wonder.

It could be so exciting to be out in the world, to be free
My heart should be wildly rejoicing Oh, what's the matter with me? I've always longed for adventure…
