Not Much Fun

Download Dec31.kmz I wish that there was a nice quiet place where young horses could be left to mature, sort of like wines and whiskey. Riding a young horse is, in my mind, a true testimony of either the love or the insanity of the owner. We set out with a couple of clients, the Sue's, and friends, Cris and Sabrina, for an hour and a half in the countryside to avoid the blast of cold air that was… Continue

Making it in Montana

Pausing to reflect on New Years..

When I was a little girl and we lived in a suburb of NY , our parents took us every summer to a country hotel complete with wrap around porch and tons of acreage in upstate New York.. The Pine Hill

Arms where all the guests knew each other and it was more like an

annual family reunion. Located inthe Adirondack Mountains... there were

tons of hiking trails and a river flowed through the property.

The combination of the owners, other…

VV Classic-Day 7

Intentions were good today. I had planned on riding to the neighbors for the New Years Eve party. However, the wind is a whistlin' & it is cooooooooold. Almost froze my buns off fixin' fence & cuttin' wood. (If I could freeze my extra gut off, I'd do it more often :o).)

Alas, the mules get the day off. We shall see what tomorrow brings.

Okay...I found the problem. This website thinks I'm in the same time zone as John T who made my vet card.....MST/MDT. I'm in Calif...PST/PDT but it won't let me change it so I still need HELP.

Vet Cards

John T,

Can a link to the vet cards be put on the main page? Is it there and I missed it? I checked in for the start at 12:02 PST but my blog shows 1pm or 13:00. I noticed the same thing for Elsie Trumbull. Is there something wrong with the time? Also, this virtual race idea is really great but the forum formatt is driving me nuts (short trip these days). Can there be just one category with everybody in it? Like just "VV Classic 2008" so I can read what everybody is…

VV Classic-Day 6

There must be some bloodhound in the mix for making mules. Nellie spent 1/2 the ride today with her nose to the ground sniffing tracks (when she wasn't nibbling sage) & then stopping to see what made them moving off. I don't miss out seeing the wildlife when she's in this mode. Lots of mule deer today (I love watching them run, it reminds me of Peppy Le Pew). I think I saw the neighborhood eagle soaring on the thermals. I didn't slow down to make sure as the wind picked up. Some gusts…

Losing internet = flat tire?

Not having a trailer of any form for my horses, I have no idea about the niceties of transportation. Any place my ponies want to go, they have to walk...but not having any net service and spending all day fighting with my broadband provider did keep me from riding on Boxing Day. But on the 27th I had two sets of clients, so I had to ride whether I wanted to or not. Angie, I think that I can give you a good run for the turtle at this rate, since both… Continue

Another desert ramble

Today we set out with Cris and Sabrina again for the first part of the ride. Sabrina's husband came out into the desert with my driver so that he could take some movies of Cris and Sabrina riding in the desert. The weather was most cooperative with a temperature of about 18 C (about 65 F except for the wind chill) and brisk winds from the southwest and clear skies. Wind direction is important here because it completely changes the temperatures, visibility, and chance of sand storms. The horses… Continue

VV Classic-Day 5

I rode Maggie today. She is still pretty young mentally. Put that together with her pony 'tude & wrap it in a mule package--she's a lot of work. Started out alone while Ali got ready. Then we headed out to visit with the neighbor about the New Years eve party. (We'll be riding over for part of that.) Then we wandered around checking out cat/kitten tracks. Mama didn't get turkey the other day, but she did bring kitten down to the pond to eat on a dead deer-yum.

Fairly warm today-IN…

VV Classic - Day 4

I took Noodle out by herself today. Spooked up many deer. Saw the cat tracks stalking turkey tracks. (I didn't follow to see if she got him, running out of time, but it will give me a mission tomorrow.) My neighbor has 3 game cameras, so we are going to try to get some pics of her & her kittens.

I don't think it made it to 20 degrees today.(I don't like to think about the wind chills.) Pretty cold out there. It's amazing what a little competition will make a person do. I know I…

Afternoon ride Dec 27

My afternoon ride was with my 14 year old Dutch/Egyptian middle schooler. She's working on some well-earned fear issues and getting over a cold, so she really didn't even feel like trotting. Best way to make turtle is like this I guess. This time I took Dubious out while she rode the ever-bouncing Bunduq. Desert was still lovely, but a cup of hot tea after the ride didn't go down too badly. And it only took me two tries each and about 3 hours to draw out the maps. LOL… Continue

Finding GE Distances and Converting GoogleEarth->GPS

The above GPS utilities will convert .kmz to GPS, find the length of a GE path, and a few other things. It is useful especially to the "HandDrawn" division as it will allow you to easily calculate the distance of one of your hand drawn paths!

VV Classic-Day 3

Ali rode with me today, so I decided to ride Nellie again so she would have a chance to go out with Misty instead of always going alone. Today was definately the coldest day for riding. I think it was around 17 when we started, 13 (wind chill 4) when we got back. Brrrrrrrr.

Stayed on the lower ground, so no cat tracks today. Did see where the mules & horses had wandered around this morning. They like to get out & cover some ground on their own.

Today's trail:…

My First Loops

Well, I'm in the running now byGolly!!

I just did two loops (well it WAS a repeat); one on Rhett (at speed to try to get him at least breathing hard - it's REALLY flat here) and one on Jose (at @8mph pace). Finished the vet check and have the data BUT - I think I will hold off publishing my vet card BECAUSE...

It turns out HRH is riding the same loop tomorrow (maybe I can get him to enter the VVClassic??:) and I think the SecretService guys would appreciate it if the whole… Continue

Dec 26 off and .....walking

I headed out later in the day then planned. It starts to get dark here by 4 oclock and the temps drop quick when the sun goes down.

My son is home for Christmas and I saddled up my green horse Chinook to ride with me. Did not have a helmet that fits him so stayed at a walk. The snow would soften the fall if he had one. Much to my dismay the trail to the river valley is fenced with barb wire and a lock on the gate. It is a sign of the times with ATV becoming such a problem for land owners.… Continue

VV Classic-Day 2

I rode Nellie today, about 6 miles. Covered some of the same area as yesterday & then some. Saw many more cat tracks. She really covered some ground last night.

VV Classic Day 1

I rode Noodle today. Just a short Christmas Day ride with my friend Ali & her QH Misty. My other mule Nellie & my donkey DW (yes, it does stand for what you think) came along for most of the ride. They did eventually head off on their own. We chose not to go with them as the sun was setting & it was getting chilly.

We had a lot of fun running around in the snow, zig-zaging around the cacti & circling trees.

The highlight of the day came on the way…
