Endurance and Long Distance Equine Disciplines

Hi Everybody,

I'm new here & new to endurance riding. I need some advice.. Please take a look at the bay KY Mtn/Arab X mare on my page & let me hear your two cents on whether or not you think she is put together properly for endurance riding. Hoping to do 50 mile rides eventually. Trying to decide what direction to go with her.. Also, is 16 too old to train a sound, healthy horse to do LD Rides? She loves to go & can go for HOURS, I think she'd love it.. Thank you all so much for your words of wisdom, being a newbie to all of this I need all the help I can get! :-)

Hi julie,  16 is not too old to enter in a 25 or a 50 miler.  Usually an arabian peaks at 13, but they stillhave many mnay healthy years if you are good to them, their feet, teeth and nutrition.  Not too many sweet foods.  if your mare is forward and seems to enjoy it and doesn't get too nervous then she's meant for it.  Best to you!!! stacy jett

Thanks Angie... We unfortunately are out of training for the time being, I have been dealing with health issues that last couple of months now. Hopefully I'll be better soon and we'll be back in training. Thank you so much for your feedback, it is much appreciated! ;-)

Thought I'd commented on this...maybe it was on the photo itself? I like her a lot. Go for it!! If the horse has been trail ridden in the past that was all training. Now it's just time to put on the finishing touches. Go ahead an do some 25's and consider it training for your first 50. Don't drag it out for years. If she's been an athletic trail horse I'd do a 50 in 4 months or so.

I think she looks great! She could probably do a 25 tomorrow. I'd go right into training for the 50. 16 is no problem, especially if she's been an active trail horse. She look like she's a very nice weight.
