Here's the link for the cooling vests I use.

They are much cheaper than the CoolMedics by far and I don't see that there's any difference. You just soak it and let it dry once before you use it the first time. I got both the Ultra Sport and the Deluxe which has the collar. If it's a hot morning, I start with the Ultra, even dry is ok, until the first water stop, then soak it. The other one I soak and wrap in a plastic bag and send in my crew bag if I want a nice cold one for the vet check. I have poured my water bottle down my back in a pinch on the dog day rides out by myself with no water around! I used my vests at the Malibu Ride, it was about 90 that day and I used the Deluxe from the vet check and it stayed cool all the way back to camp, about 3 hours and it was a dry, breezy, hot day!
I'm gonna check out the elytes you mentioned, sounds quick and easy. I've been using Driven, it's a mix of elytes, L carnitine and some other chemistry to help alleviate muscle soreness from lactic acid and keep up the energy level. Worked great on my last 50, felt better than most of my LDs!! And no soreness 2 days later...
Wish I could go to Fireworks, I've seen photos and some of my friends go, but I can't justify the drive when there are so many rides coming up around here. Gotta get ready for Tejon Ranch, my next 50, yikes.
Here's Bo Haskim (my Wonder Horse) at home after a 30 miler at age 25.

Here's my webshots page if you want to see thousands of pictures of endurance weekends, horse camping and plain old horsing around :)

Yeah, it's an obsession!! Have a great weekend....
Sorry I missed you when you were in Tahoe last weekend. Call me next time!
Thursday we're riding to Fallen Leaf Lake, and next week to Spooner/Marlette, etc, and the week after we're doing the PCT to the Forestdale Divide and Twin Lakes. All spectacular riding. ~ I'll post pics on my blog page.
Happy Trails... Deanne, Gabe & Bandit
You commented on the green of Agua Dulce....boy, do I wish!! Those really green flowery photos were from the Cuyama XP Ride in March. It's about 100 miles from me between Santa Maria on the coast and Bakersfield. This year was spectacular because of early rain. Agua Dulce is quite beautiful, too, for high desert, and has a very short green season! I've been going camping with the horses since there are no "local" rides during the hot months. I keep watching the video from EHSC endurance ride that's on my site when I get the jones to ride. My next competition will probably be GitRDone in Oct. I don't usually ride the flat rides, but my 14 y.o. nephew has been training on my 28 yo gelding Bo (my cover photo) and it'll be a good first ride for him. I'll ride my 10 y.o. mare, Z. She's done 6-7 LDs and 2 50's. Well, I RO'd at 40 miles on the 1st one because she wasn't drinking. But she's come SO far. And so have I!!
This is the year I'm tackling my heat issues, got 2 cooling vests and they really help. Also trying different electrolytes for humans and I'm having more fun. What are your plans?
Hope all is going well with everyone's riding season. Don't forget the Gold Country Endurance Ride is July 5, 2008. Happy Trails!
By the way, maybe you've read the Tale of Tsar Saltan? Alexander Pushkin wrote about Don horses 177 years ago!
"We have sailed the seven seas,
Selling horses, Prince Guidon -
Stallions from the steppes of Don.
We are overdue, you know,
And we still have far to go -
Past the Island of Buyan,
Back to gracious Tsar Saltan."

We staged from the finish gate. The riders rode to Cool, CA, rested the horses, had lunch, and rode back to the finish gate. I don't have any of their pictures yet. When I do I'll definitely get them posted. It was absolutely amazing the feeling one gets seeing how happy such a simple 15 mile ride could make people.
The next few weeks have brought some cheers and jeers. It was apparent that our rescue, Tara, was not going to fair well in her advanced age of 40+ and needed to be euthanized. It is the first rescue I had to say I was not going to be able to save. And as my vet put it, "you can't save them all D'Arcy!" Sad but a sombering statement.
We also started to place some of our older horses that are no longer having fun. We placed Jade and Estrella with a handicapped riding program in Pleasant Grove, CA. They will interact with kids everyday. Some days they will ride. Most days they will be handled, groomed, and graze. Jade was particularly happy to see out over the horizon of the 500 acre place COWS!
Cows being Jade's one true love. HERDING them! LOL! It was very cute seeing the expression on her face. With her ears perked straight up, her mouth gaped, and the intensity of her body. As if she was ready to get right out there and do the job, Dan Kirn, originally trained her to do. I of course thought that was a perfect waste of a riding horse. Now, I see that maybe that is where she would have been the happiest. :) Nah, who wants a broken down horse at 15. She is still going strong at 27.
So, I bid them a fond farewell knowing they are going to be very well taken care of and very happy. Not to mention they will continue with the same farrier. So, I am sure Ed will keep me abreast of their status.
Last but not least we said goodbye to our dear old Kasey Keeshond (17 years old). He was a rescue that no one wanted because he had 'issues' with children. He eventually outgrew them and we decided he was just fine where he was. Kasey was almost blind, had hip problems and was unable to get up last weekend. I knew when he stopped wanting to be groomed that he was in a lot of pain. Kasey is buried under the oak tree with Kismet, his best friend in life, Athena, who bossed him around to no end, and Dot the chicken. He is in god company at Rainbow Bridge - of that I am most certain.
As if that wasn't enough sadness our dear Terre Joy twisted her leg and broke her fetlock joint - yesterday!! She will be euthanized and buried next to Skyfire - her last foal that died at the age of three from a complication of 'dismaturity' - so that, my friends, I hope, is the END of the sadness here at KD Arabians.
I do, however, look back to the beginning of the month, with the wonderful visit from Chris Anton and the Aussie Mob of 2008 that she brought with her. The smiles come quickly and the tears subside to what looks to be a bright future in endurance.
